2554. Scott Helland

Scott Helland is the musician half of the group Frenchy and the Punk, which he created with vocalist and lyricist Samantha Stephenson. He plays guitar and drums.

Scott started performing when he was 14, playing bass in the hardcore punk band Deep Wound for two years with fellow musicians J Mascis and Lou Barlow, who went on to form Dinosaur Jr. Deep Wound's sole album release is still available today. He later played in the Outpatients for 13 years with his older brother, Vis, touring around the United States. After moving to New York City, Scott joined punk metal band School of Violence for several years. In 1995, he started his journey as a solo musician and released 7 solo CDs, starting with the experimental Hellbox Mood Rings in 1996.

He met artist Samantha Stephenson in 1998, and while they began collaborating on a number of artistic projects, it would be 2005 before they actually performed together. During one of Scott's solo performances, Samantha jumped onstage, grabbed a tambourine and accompanied him for the rest of the set. After that night, they began collaborating on music projects combining Samantha's lyrics with Scott's music. They first called themselves Scott Helland and the Traveling Band of Gypsy Nomads, then The Gypsy Nomads but later changed their name to Frenchy and the Punk, which they said fit their feel better as well as being a more literal interpretation of who they were.

Scott is also an avid artist, creating pen and ink drawings on parchment paper, as well as using a Sharpie on fabric. His themes mix female forms with nature, medieval and celtic symbols, and guitars.

Frenchy and the Punk features French-born British artist/dancer Samantha Stephenson on vocals, percussion and drums and Helland on guitar, drums, and live guitar loops. Touring extensively year round in the US and Europe they perform at festivals, theatres, conventions, clubs and cafes and can be heard on independent radio in the US and Europe.
